Almost everyone has a view on what the UK’s immigration policy should look like after Brexit. Whichever side of the debate you’re on, you’ll probably agree that the country needs a clear and certain system to help us meet the challenges of the future.
This isn’t a plea for an open-door policy. That wouldn’t help anyone in the long term, least of all British workers who deserve the chance to get the skills and jobs they need for their own growth. However, the system as it stands isn’t helping the big and small businesses who need overseas skills and labour to grow or survive. Leaving the EU could provide the UK with a unique chance to redesign its immigration system, but we need to plan for a no-deal scenario as much as for an “orderly departure”.
