Krakow has been identified as the best destination for a pound-stretching trip.

The famous Polish city has the most affordable food, hotels, public transport and attraction tickets in all of Europe, according to Post Office Travel Money.

It costs an average of £165 for a two night stay with food, drinks, sightseeing and transport.

The top seven cheapest locations are all in eastern Europe, including Vilnius in Lithuania, Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary and Riga in Latvia.

Moscow is sixth on the list, due to the weak Russian ruble, low living costs and cheap accommodation.

Andrew Brow, from Post Office Travel Money, said: “Check prices for key items such as meals, drinks and sightseeing before booking because there are big variations.

“Accommodation will make a big difference too as we found that the cost of staying over in a city can vary by hundreds of pounds.”

Amsterdam is the most expensive short-break destination at £535. Oslo is the next most pricey city with a weekend trip around £510.

Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Venice are also costly. But the pound has risen against several European currencies so even the more expensive cities are cheaper than a year ago.

The news came as Ryanair announced yesterday it is to begin flights to Ukraine, starting at around £20.

Revellers are expected to flock to cities such as Kiev and Lviv, where pints cost just 49p.

On Sunday Norwegian will launch the UK’s cheapest direct flights to Chicago from £139.90 one way.
